I WANT TO SPEAK PUNJABI
I have accumulated some words that I was going to put up just for my own remote access and archival purposes, and decided to make them available for others.  If you are also learning Punjabi, or speak Punjabi and would like to help, feel free to contact me via hotmail or MSN - I'm "rupa_dew".
I know it is very difficult to find resources and I would love to have people to study with.

To view the Gurmukhi script on this page, please download Punjabi font for proper display.  I will list some resources at the bottom of this page.  I have done fairly extensive hunting online and in booksellers, and have purchased every book I could find.  That didn't amount to much, sadly.  I have included my opinions on a few products along with my web links.  Happy learning, good luck!  Remember, a preposition is a word you should never end a sentence with.

Lesson One - One with the flowers
The following list of 142 words were all gleaned from a single joke, translated for me by a man who is at heart, one with the flowers.

Here are some useful sites I have found. They are grouped, dictionaries/converters and translators first, teaching guides next.
If you know of any other free Punjabi language sites or resources, PLEASE contact me so I can add a link!

This is just for looking up an english word and finding the Punjabi word written in English so one can SAY the word.

Transliterate from English to Gurmukhi This site is of use to Punjabi speakers learning English.  It will transliterate English words to Gurmukhi script.  This will not TRANSLATE to Punjabi, only create the word phonetically to help with pronunciation of the English word.  This is also available for download, but the program and the website require Mozilla or Firefox, or some other browser to work.  Does NOT work in MS Internet Explorer.
Example:  look : ਲੂਕ੍

The Punjbi Dictionary   This is a nice one,  it gives the English translations for Punjabi words queried in Punjabi.  My only complaint is it's so littered with links it's hard one might miss the actual content by starting at their home page.  I have linked the actual dictionary for convenience.

They also have an extensive section of lessons, and I have included the menu below.
Example:

ਝਾਤ    look, glance, peep    ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ,  ਨਜ਼ਰ, ਦੇਖਣੀ, ਝਾਕੀ, ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼

Example of their lessons, although many links are broken and there are a lot of strange HTML errors.
Still, all in all a good site.

Some sites include images and sounds to help with pronunciation of the alphabet, along with some example words.
I don't know who created this collection, but I have found the exact same sounds and images attached to a couple of different sites.  Here they are.  I find the sound quality to be much better on the first link, so I would suggest using it to practice just the alphabet and tenses.  The second link has a lot of extra example words, so I've given a direct tlink to that portion, but the whole site is useful.

BOOKS AND OTHER LANGUAGE SOFTWARE

I DO RECOMMEND THE FOLLOWING TWO ITEMS:

[book]
About USD $20-$30
Punjabi-English/English-Punjabi Dictionary by K. K. Goswami (Paperback - Aug 2002)
Publication Date: 1/1/2002 - ISBN: 0-7818-0940-1
Published by HIPPOCRENE BOOKS in NYC.  You can purchase it directly from www.hippocrenebooks.com for $19.95.  So far it seems to be very nice.  The printing is of high quality and on good paper stock.  The book is designed for speakers of either Punjabi or English, with Romanized Punjabi pronunciation and English pronunciation given in Gurmukhi.  Over 25,000 total entries offer multiple, comprehensive translations, including idiomatic usages, colloquial expressions, and derivations of words.  Paperback 782 pages 5 x 7.

Teach Yourself Panjabi Audio Course
About USD $17-$33
Teach Yourself Panjabi Complete Course Audiopackage by Surjit Kalram, Navtej Kaur Purewal, and Sue Tyson-Ward
(Paperback - April 21, 2004)
This book and the accompanying CDs (or cassettes) are wonderful, in my opinion.  They have a methodology that seems to make sense and they describe things very clearly.  They have native speakers to help with pronunciation, and the publishing is of high quality.
--------------------------------------------------
DO NOT RECOMMEND THE FOLLOWING:

This is the second in a series (the first book is not available it seems) and it is not at all easy, as the title suggests.  Nearly entirely written in Gurmukhi script, it is useless for absolute beginners.
Punjabi Made Easy
About USD $5-$10
Punjabi Made Easy by J.S. Nagra (Paperback - Nov 2, 1987)

I found this to be mostly a waste of money,  It's cute, if all you want to do is be able to amuse people with knowing your colors and how to ask for directions etc... perhaps alright for a casual tourist, but not very useful if you actually want to speak and understand Punjabi.  If you MUST buy it, get it on eBay for about half what anyone else wants for it.
Talk Now! Punjabi
About USD $20-$50
Talk Now! Punjabi From EuroTalk CD program
(Macintosh, Windows)
